Sorry. It's Not 2008 Anymore

Planking is dead...

Blockbuster is in company heaven...

And Tom has unfriended you on MySpace.

And gone too are the days of restaurants and bars having overflowing CV stacks espousing the virtues of eager candidates ready to work an unpaid trial shift.

The reality is hospitality is now officially a buyer's market and just like other areas of their business, venues who want to attract the best people will have to work at it to stand out.

It's a hard truth, but those who ignore it are doomed to swirl around in a muddy whirlpool of chronic short-staff-ed-ness.

Okay, I made that word up, but you get the idea.

So how do attract the best talent?

You SHARE YOUR VISION.

Shout and scream about what you're here to do! Tell them about the things you do best, what you love about your venue, and what you're most proud of as a business.

Do you have the absolute best steak in the area?

...Put it in the job ads

Do you want guests to feel like they have gone back to a simpler time?

...Where's that in your social media?

Did you start the business because you fell in love with the complexities of South East Asian cusine when you went backpacking during your quarter-life crisis (probably in 2008)?

....Brilliant! That's what the about page on websites are for, people love that sh*t!

The point is this:

When teams agree on what's important;

When your people want to do what you want to do;

And when they believe what you believe

... They attract each other like magnets

It's too late for 2008 thinking but better solutions are waiting for those willing to adapt.
